Bol, which released on June 24 2011, inPakistan, broke all previous box-office records in the country. In this film, Shoaib internalizes the country’s obdurate stand on traditional tenets, especially when it comes to young women. The story focuses on a very religious-minded father who has a family of five marriageable girls and a young son. One feisty daughter rises against his obscurantism, while another elopes. When the effeminate son is sexually abused, the father’s contained ideologies collapse. A brutal and heavy price paid by the family leads to a more liberal change and secure world for the remaining daughters. The director says, “Tragically, our interpretation and application of religion seem to begin and end with women. Leaving the five per cent of the urban educated elite aside, women seem to be the battleground where we practice a medieval form of religion.”
The film will be followed by a Q&A session with the main actress Humaima Malik.
