Set in Durban, Lucky marks the international debut of leading Bangalore-based thespian Jayashree Basavra (as Padma), featured with child actor Sihle Dlamini in the lead role of Lucky. The film is based on the narrative short of the same name which premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival. It received special mention at the AFI Festival in Los Angeles, was nominated for the 2006 BAFTA Award, and short-listed for a 2007 Oscar. The positive response led Avie Luthra (Mad, Sad and Bad, Canterbury Tales – BBC), to develop Lucky into a feature film. This cross-cultural film (in Zulu and Hindi) is about 10-year-old Lucky, a South Africa Zulu orphan whose mother has just died of AIDS. Bent on going to school to make something of himself, he leaves the village for the big city. There, he goes to the uncle (with whom his mother had left money for his education). The uncle, a dissolute wastrel, has no time for him. Quite by chance, Lucky is befriended by an elderly South Indian woman, suspicious and wary of him due to her pathological fear of Africans. Nudged by her bewildered conscience, she takes Lucky in grudgingly and at a distance. Together they develop an unlikely bond, which leads to a potentially promising and unexpected future. Through an odyssey marked by greed, violence, and, ultimately, belonging, Lucky shows how a child’s spirit can bring out decency, humility and even love in adults struggling to survive in the new South Africa.
