Dr. Toyeba Mushtaq is currently the Head of Curation at UK Asian Film Festival. She is a filmscholar, curator, and cultural programmer with over ten years’ experience in festival management, film programming, project delivery, gender and film research. She has successfully written and managed funding bids for the British Film Institute, British Council, and Arts Council England, and continues to bring both strategic and creative expertise to cultural projects. She has played a key role in sourcing and showcasing independent films from the South Asian subcontinent in the UK, using cinema asa platform to spark conversations around stories and communities that are toooften underrepresented - or worse, misrepresented - in dominant narratives. She holds a PhD in Film Studies, focusing on Indian cinema and LGBTQIA+ representation, and has published extensively in national and international journals. Alongside her academic research, she has made documentaries on issues including women’s empowerment, the environment, and travel, and has written widely for Indian newspapers. Her recent publication ‘Framing Transgenderism: Violent Othering of Transgender People in Urban Kashmir’ will be printed in Urban Violence and Marginalised Communities – Multidisciplinary Interpretations, UCL Press in March 2026. A Gold Medallist she has also investigated the role of television in suburban India and documented gendered exploitationin healthcare. Above all, she remains committed to building platforms for diverse voices and socially engaged storytelling.
