UK Asian Film Festival a Trip Down Memory Lane

Keeping with this year’s Uprooted festival theme we have put together a 14 day watchlist of films previously screened at our film festival that are available on digital platforms.


1. Brick Lane (2007), Director Sarah Gavron on Netflix

At the age of 17, Nazneen leaves Bangladesh for an arranged marriage to an older husband in London’s Brick Lane. Ten years on, although she has given Chanu two daughters, made him a home and trimmed the corns on his feet, she yearns to break free. She begins an illicit affair with Karim, the dashing market trader for whom she sews jeans.


2. Monsoon Wedding (2001), Director Mira Nair on Amazon Prime

A stressed father, a bride-to-be with a secret, a smitten event planner, and relatives from around the world create much ado about the preparations for an arranged marriage in India.


3. KD (2019), Director Madhumita Sundararaman on Netflix

An 80-year-old man who was in a coma for three months suddenly wakes up and overhears his family planning to kill him by performing an ancient euthanasia ritual.


4. Page 3 (2005), Director Madhur Bhandarkar on Amazon Prime

A look at Mumbai’s socialite party circle world through the eyes of a Page 3 journalist.


5. Pinjar (2003), Director Chandraprakash Dwivedi on Amazon Prime

Rashid abducts Puro, a young Hindu woman, to take revenge on her family over an ancestral dispute. However, when she manages to escape, her family disowns her and she is forced to return to Rashid.

An anthology of four short stories set during the India-Pakistan partition in 1947 that shed light on the genocide between the religions.


10. Zubaan (2015), Director Mozez Singh on Amazon Prime and Netflix

An ambitious Dilsher is saved by a site owner, Gurucharan, when some boys bully him at a gurdwara. After he grows up, Dilsher wants to pursue singing but feels nervous as he has a speech impairment.

A 15 year old boy, struggling with his adolescent years, is terrorized by a gang of bullies in a posh boarding school. This sets forth a chain of events that leads to a loss of life and innocence.
